Raise a glass of hierbas ibicencas (and if it's ours, much better)
Ya se sabe lo que dice el refrán español: “donde fueres, haz lo que vieres”. As the saying goes: “When in Spain do as the Spanish do”. So during your holidays in Ibiza, forget about the G&T for once and order a glass of hierbas ibicencas after lunch. This is a delicious traditional herb liqueur with excellent digestive properties. But don’t get too carried away, it’s sweet but it goes to your head.
what is hierbas ibicencas?
Schnapps, anisette and a bunch of herbs. These ingredients make up the well-known hierbas ibicencas, a liqueur which is usually offered at traditional restaurants after lunch due to its digestive properties. It is sometimes served as a shot, but it’s nicer to sip it from a larger glass with ice. If you like it and try it at different restaurants, you’ll soon notice that it varies from one place to another, as each family or business has its own recipe and they have their own formula to mix the rosemary, rue, juniper, sage, thyme, fennel, lemon verbena, lavender, eucalyptus, chamomile, oregano and mint.
WHERE CAN I TRY THE hierbas ibicencas?
If you’d like to try them, you’ll find them at practically all traditional beach bars and restaurants. We suggest you try it at Can Xicu in Sant Miquel or at Casa Anita in Sant Carles or on the Hostal La Torre terrace overlooking the sea, where we will serve an ice-cold glass of our Mambo Hierbas. And don’t forget that you can also drink it once you’re back home, as you can buy different brands of hierbas ibicencas at the shops on the island or at the airport. Take a bottle home and surprise your friends at your next house party. Let them get a delicious taste of Ibiza...
