How to prepare a Paloma cocktail and where do they serve them in Ibiza?

If you want to surprise your friends or if you want to replicate at home the delicious cocktail you discovered this summer, here we’ll teach you how to prepare a Paloma (which in Spanish means dove and is also a woman’s name) with barrel-aged Patrón Tequila Reposado in only a few, simple steps. And follow the trend that comes from the other side of the Atlantic. After all, if a drink has its own international day on the world calendar, it’s surely time to add it to your must-know-how-to-make cocktails list, right? And yes, 22nd May is World Paloma Day, a special day to honour Mexican culture and its influence on the cocktail universe, which for decades has given centre stage to its celebrity cocktail, the classic Margarita. Learning how to make this new trendy mix is very easy, far more than tracking its origins, with several non-confirmed authorships which add a touch of mystery to this refreshing cocktail that is proud to have become the second most ordered cocktail in Mexico behind the Margarita. .

Recipe to prepare a Paloma with Tequila Patrón Reposado

First of all, the ingredients. Make sure you’ve got them all or you won't be getting a Paloma in your glass.

  • 45 ml de Patrón reposado
  • 45ml of Tequila Patrón Reposado
  • 82.5ml of grapefruit juice
  • 15ml of agave syrup
  • 15ml of freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 30ml of soda or seltzer water
  • Sugar and salt to coat the rim
  • Slice of grapefruit for garnish

And now, the step-by-step method. Difficulty: Easy. Best glass to serve it in? A Collins glass.

  1. Pour all liquid ingredients into a cocktail shaker except the soda water.
  2. Add ice.
  3. Shake to mix well and cool it.
  4. Coat the rim of the Collins glass with sugar and salt.
  5. Fill with ice.
  6. Pour the mix from the cocktail shaker through a sieve.
  7. Add the soda water.
  8. Garnish with a slice of fresh or dried grapefruit.

When is the best time to order a Paloma?

This trendy cocktail is perfect during lunch or after lunch, as it’s refreshing, citric and light, with a slight bitter twist, like a G&T. The perfect choice for summer evenings in Ibiza with your friends or lover, especially on a hot evening and, of course, while you’re waiting for the sunset. We’ll let you know that it combines well with light dishes with a citric touch, in case you’re looking for a refreshing pairing with lunch or dinner.
