Find out about the best winter food (and our new menu)
The lower temperatures, the fewer hours of sun and the dryness of this season mean that our body needs certain nutrients to avoid colds and other discomforts that come with the winter season. Discover the food you should add to your shopping basket and the new specialities on our winter menu.
pulses
Beans, chickpeas and lentils; all pulses are an ideal source of proteins, are low fat, have a lot of fibre and provide vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are essential for our organism. And there are so many ways to prepare them. Our menu suggests our Pulse salad with quinoa, tart apples and pomegranate dressing. Both these fruits are seasonal.
Potato, sweet potato, radish, garlic, leek and other root vegetables
During these cold months, our body needs more calories to keep warm. Root vegetables provide energy and in the winter we can use them to prepare soups, creams, stews and other dishes, including our Poached leek and sobrasada croquettes with a black garlic aioli. Also, this dish includes another traditional and seasonal product: Spanish charcuterie.
nuts
Walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, pine nuts, chestnuts and pistachios have a high-calorie value that helps fight the cold. They are also rich in fibre, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and omega 6 fatty acids. The winter menu at Hostal La Torre has added nuts to some of its dishes to provide them with our special touch.
Brussel sprouts and green-leaf vegetables
Swiss chard, spinach, artichokes, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cardoon and watercress should be in your shopping basket in the winter to nourish our body with vitamins A, B9, C, E and K, fibre and minerals such as calcium, potassium, iron and phosphorus. Regular consumption of these vegetables will improve the state of your bronchial mucosa and soothe coughs. If you like watercress, order our Fig and caramelized orange salad with watercress, stracciatella cheese and toasted pine nuts.
APPLES AND CITRUS FRUITS
These two fruits, along with pineapple and bananas, are the winter stars. As other winter products, it provides energy and vitamins B, C, K and A, which helps with the renovation of cells. Quince, persimmon, kiwi, pomegranate and pears complete the seasonal fruit these months. On our menu, you will find apples in our succulent Suckling pig cooked at low temperature and served with apple sauce and creamy Jerusalem artichoke mash.
